INSTRUCTORS & SPEAKERS

Niki Khoshzamir, PracticePro 

Niki Khoshzamir is the Founder and CEO of PracticePro and leads all business and legal aspects of the company including corporate governance, IP portfolio, product development, and strategic partnerships. Niki speaks at law firms and companies nationwide on a variety of skills topics including new associate skills, professional branding, networking, project management, and diversity as a business asset. She also consults with law firms to strengthen training and diversity programs, including helping diverse and first-generation associates to succeed as attorneys.

Prior to founding PracticePro, Niki was an attorney for seven years at the global firms of Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale & Dorr, LLP, and Kirkland and Ellis, LLP. She focused her practice on intellectual property litigation, complex commercial disputes, and trade sanctions compliance. Niki successfully represented companies and individuals in federal and state courts, and in all stages of litigation including trial. From 2011 to 2017, Niki was a Lecturer at Law at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law where she created and taught a skills course titled The Junior Litigation Associate

Niki currently serves on the national advisory board of the Iranian American Bar Association (IABA), and is the former president of the Northern California Chapter, which she founded in 2006 and grew to one of the largest and most active chapters of the organization. She also serves on the Leadership Council of Advancing Justice – Asian Law Caucus and judges the Excellence in Writing Competition of the Continuing Bar Education. 

Niki received her B.S. in Biology, summa cum laude, from Texas Southern University, and a J.D. and Certificate in Law and Technology from Berkeley Law. Prior to her legal career, she was a research assistant at the MD Anderson Cancer Center and the Baylor College of Medicine Human Genome Sequencing Center. Niki grew up in Tehran, London, and Vienna and immigrated to the United States on her own at 19 to attend college. She credits her passion for diversity and inclusion to her classmates and teachers at the American International High School in Vienna. 

 

Jonathan B. Brown, Davis Polk

Jonathan Brown is Counsel at Davis Polk’s New York City office. He represents financial sponsors, corporate borrowers, underwriters and various lenders in a wide range of U.S. and cross-border transactions, including leveraged acquisition financings, project financings, asset-based financings, exit financings and investment-grade, unsecured financings.

His sponsor and corporate clients have included Cornell Capital, Crestview Partners, Lightyear Capital, Loews, Madison Dearborn Partners, Metalmark Capital, Computer Sciences, Pernix Therapeutics Holdings and Ultra Clean Holdings. In addition, hedge funds and corporations seek Jonathan’s advice in negotiating MRA and GMRA-standard agreements and other trading and financing documentation.

Jonathan received his B.A. in Metropolitan Studies & Politics from New York University, and graduated from the New York University School of Law.

 

Danny Dominguez, Latham & Watkins

Danny Dominguez is Local Co-Chair of the Litigation & Trial Department in the Washington, D.C. office of Latham & Watkins, a partner in the Litigation Department, and a member of the White Collar Defense & Investigations Practice. Danny primarily advises clients on white collar defense, internal investigations, and enforcement actions by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) and the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Danny also has extensive experience conducting internal investigations in Spanish and counseling clients throughout Latin America.

Prior to rejoining the firm, Danny served as Associate Counsel to President Barack Obama in the Office of the White House Counsel. In this role, Danny provided strategic legal guidance to the White House Counsel and senior White House advisors on a wide range of legal and policy issues, including matters related to congressional oversight and investigations and other compliance-related matters. Danny also counseled several federal agency clients and worked with clients to develop strategies in response to congressional investigations.

Danny received his B.A. from American University, and graduated from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, cum laude.

 

David Ephraim, Morrison & Foerster

David is the Managing Partner of Morrison & Foerster’s Boston office and Global Chair of the Lending and Financial Transactions Group. He represents banks, other institutional lenders, debt and equity funds, commercial finance companies, mezzanine funds, second lien funds, and various other non–bank lenders.

David represents clients on all aspects of secured lending, including asset–based financing, fund finance, venture debt, second lien financing, mezzanine financing, receivables financing, acquisition financing, syndications, loan restructurings, and workouts. A substantial part of his practice involves cross–border financing transactions. David also has nationally recognized experience in, and is a frequent speaker on, secured lending in the areas of technology, life sciences, venture capital, and fund finance.

David has been ranked in Band 3 in the area of Banking & Finance law by Chambers USA 2020, with commentators identifying him as “a ‘power player’ in the fund financing space.” Clients remark, “He’s fantastic; he’s a great listener and a great businessman who is able to take very complicated matters and simplify them so people who are not attorneys can understand.”

David received his B.S. in Finance, magna cum laude, from University of Connecticut and a J.D., with honors, from University of Connecticut School of Law.

 

Carrie Flynn, LegalZoom

Carrie Flynn is a Senior Director in the Legal Department at LegalZoom, where she heads up Litigation, Employment and Trademarks, and is currently also the interim head of Corporate Legal and Commercial Transactions.

She joined LegalZoom in January 2022 after 12 years at Symantec (now NortonLifeLock), where she focused primarily on managing the Litigation/Government Investigations team and advising legal colleagues and business clients on how best to mitigate litigation and regulatory risk. At various times, she also led Ethics & Compliance, Corporate Responsibility, IP, Legal Operations, Government Affairs, and the Legal Department’s D&I committee.

Prior to joining Symantec, she practiced product liability and complex commercial litigation at the law firm of Nixon Peabody, after graduating from Pomona College and Stanford Law School.

 

James Griffin-Stanco, Wilson Sonsini

James Griffin-Stanco is a partner in the Wilmington office of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, where he maintains a Delaware corporate law and corporate governance practice, providing advice to clients through all stages of a company’s life cycle, including with regard to fiduciary duties, entity formation, venture financings, public offerings, mergers and acquisitions, and statutory requirements. He also represents special committees of boards of directors in mergers, internal investigations and other transactions, and provides corporate advice in the context of litigation and appraisals.

James currently serves as co-chair of the firm’s Associates Committee and is a member of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

James received his B.A. from Boston University, and graduated, cum laude, from Georgetown University Law Center.

 

Tracy Richelle High, Sullivan & Cromwell

Tracy Richelle High is a partner in Sullivan & Cromwell’s Litigation Group, a co-Head of the Firm’s Labor and Employment Law Group and a member of the Criminal Defense and Investigations practice. Tracy’s practice focuses on representing financial institutions and other corporations in complex civil litigation, arbitration and mediation proceedings, corporate internal investigations, and labor and employment matters. She has also represented clients before a wide variety of regulatory and prosecutorial agencies, both at the state and federal levels, as well as Congressional committees and independent examiners appointed by court order.

Internally, Tracy serves as co-chair of the Diversity Committee and is one of S&C’s hiring partners. Tracy also oversees S&C’s active networks for minority associates: the Asian Associates Network, the Network of Black & Latino Lawyers and the LGBT Network. Each of these groups is dedicated to enhancing the experience of S&C’s diverse attorneys and championing their retention and advancement by fostering professional development, networking and mentoring opportunities.

Externally, Tracy is the Chairwoman of the board of directors of the YWCA-NYC, a Vice Chairwoman of the Legal Aid Society and a board member of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. She also serves on the Steering Committee of the Kate Stoneman Project, is a Trustee of the Harvard Law School Association, New York City, and is a member of the Association of Black Women Attorneys and Metropolitan Black Bar Association. Tracy is also a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation.

Tracy is a graduate of Yale University and Harvard Law School.

 

Gabriel Lara, Chapman 

Gabriel Lara is an associate in Chapman’s Commercial Lending Group and a member of the Banking and Financial Services Department. His practice is focused on representing creditors, including banks and other financial institutions, in a wide range of secured and unsecured credit facilities.

Gabriel is the recipient of the 2021 Pro Bono and Volunteer Achievement Award for his contributions to pro bono projects. He devotes a significant amount of time to Chicago Community Loan Fund, whose mission is to provide flexible, affordable, and responsible financing and technical assistance for community stabilization and development efforts and initiatives that benefit low- to moderate-income neighborhoods, families, and individuals throughout Chicago.

During law school, Gabriel was recognized as the “Law Student of the Year” by the Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois, received the “Outstanding Leadership Award” from Chicago-Kent College of Law, and regularly volunteered with pro bono organizations, including the Pro Bono Project and Southeast Louisiana Legal Services. Gabriel was also a PracticePro Diversity Scholar. Following law school, Gabriel served as a Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) Fellow at Ascend Justice where he worked on immigration and order of protection matters.

Gabriel received his B.S. from Tufts University and J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law.

 

Anne Lee, Covington & Burling

Anne Lee is a partner in Covington’s Washington, DC office. She also serves as the co-chair of Covington’s global Antitrust and Competition Law Practice Group, advises clients in complex antitrust litigation matters, strategic transactions, and government investigations. She represents clients before the DOJ and FTC on multi-jurisdictional mergers, competitor collaborations, and joint ventures, and she has litigated cases at the trial and appellate levels in both state and federal courts. Anne also provides antitrust counseling on a wide range of business conduct and compliance issues. A recognized leader in the area, Anne has been named to the “40 Under 40” rankings of both The National Law Journal and Global Competition Review.

Anne received her A.B. magna cum laude from Harvard University, and graduated from Columbia Law School.

 

Duane McLaughlin, Cleary

Duane McLaughlin is a partner in Cleary’s New York City office. His practice focuses on bank lending and debt capital markets.

Duane regularly represents investment grade and leverage borrowers and issuers as well as private equity sponsors and portfolio companies. He also represents lenders, underwriters, and debt investors.

Duane has extensive experience in acquisition financing transactions, and he has been involved in a number of transactions in Latin America.

Duane received his B.A. from University of Wisconsin, and graduated from Columbia Law School where he was a James Kent Scholar and a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar.

 

Lona Nallengara, Shearman & Sterling

Lona Nallengara is the Global Corporate Finance Practice Group Leader and a partner in the Capital Markets Group of Shearman & Sterling LLP. He focuses on advising companies, financial institutions and their boards on corporate governance, disclosure, and securities law compliance matters and on the financial regulatory process. He also advises companies and financial institutions on all aspects of public and private offerings of equity, equity-linked, high yield debt and investment grade debt securities.

Prior to returning to Shearman & Sterling LLP in 2017, Lona served in senior positions at the Securities and Exchange Commission for over four years. From 2013 to 2015, he served as Chief of Staff to SEC Chair Mary Jo White, where he was the top advisor to the Chair on all issues, including policy development, rulemaking, strategy and management. During this time, he led the rulemaking and implementation efforts related to all mandates under the Dodd-Frank and JOBS Acts and directed the SEC’s asset management, market structure, public company disclosure effectiveness and private offering reform programs. He also served as the SEC deputy to the Financial Stability Oversight Council and was the primary SEC liaison with other financial regulators. Lona joined the SEC in 2011 as Deputy Director of the Division of Corporation Finance and later became its Acting Director. In this role, he was responsible for the division’s overall activities and operations, including rulemaking, interpretive guidance and the public company filing review program. Following his SEC tenure, Lona joined Bridgewater Associates, LP, where he was the Chief Governance Officer and a senior advisor to founder Ray Dalio.

Lona earned his LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School and his B.A. from University of Western Ontario.

 

Karin Portlock, Gibson Dunn 

Karin Portlock is Of Counsel in the New York office of Gibson Dunn & Crutcher and is a member of the White Collar Defense and Investigations, Labor and Employment, Crisis Management, and Litigation Practice Groups. Karin has a broad-based government enforcement and investigations practice, focusing on the full spectrum of internal corporate investigations, including highly sensitive workplace investigations and independent inquiries, as well as regulatory enforcement matters and criminal defense. Karin has conducted numerous confidential investigations into #MeToo, discrimination, harassment, and related allegations of misconduct, including executive misconduct, for companies in a variety of industries, including the media, technology, financial services, and entertainment sectors.

Prior to joining Gibson Dunn, Karin served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York from 2015 to 2020. Prior to her government service, she practiced for several years at another major international law firm, where she litigated complex civil cases and appeals before state and federal appellate courts.

Karin is an advocate for diversity in the profession and has written on the advantages of diverse investigative teams. She is consistently cognizant of the benefits that diverse legal teams bring to her clients and is committed to developing diverse talent and mentoring junior lawyers of color. She is a member of the 2022 fellowship class for the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity.

Karin received her undergraduate degree from Stanford University and is a graduate of Columbia Law School where she was the Editor-in-Chief of the Columbia Law Review—the first Black student to hold that position.

 

Annabel Rodriguez, McDermott Will & Emery

Annabel Rodriguez is an associate in McDermott’s Boston office. She focuses her practice on complex civil litigation and white-collar defense.

Prior to joining the Firm, Annabel clerked for the Hon. William G. Young for the US District Court for the District of Massachusetts. She also served as a law clerk for the Hon. Mary T. Sullivan of the Massachusetts Appeals Court.

Annabel received her B.A. from Boston University, and graduated from Suffolk University Law School, cum laude. While in law school, Annabel served as editor-in-chief for the Suffolk Journal of Trial & Appellate Advocacy.

 

Souvik Saha, WilmerHale

Souvik Saha is Counsel at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale & Dorr (WilmerHale), where he focuses his practice on trial and appellate litigation, government and regulatory litigation and investigations. Prior to joining the firm in 2013, he completed internships with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as well as the National Security Division of the United States Department of Justice.

Prior to his legal education, Souvik served as a Fulbright Fellow in New Delhi, India, researching India’s energy security initiatives, intellectual property law regime and foreign direct investment.

Souvik graduated, cum laude, from Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law where he was a Senior Editor of the Northwestern Journal of International Law and Business. He also holds an M.A. in International Affairs from Columbia University, and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley.

 

Amie Santos, Cooley LLP

Amie Santos is the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Cooley. Strengthened by her background in change management, talent recruitment, and program development, Amie collaborates with firm management to implement strategies aimed towards increasing the representation and promotion of women and diverse lawyers and professional staff at Cooley.

Amie holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and Business Management from Radford University. After her undergraduate studies, she received a Graduate Certificate in Leadership in Human Resources from the University of Virginia.

Prior to joining Cooley, Amie was the Firmwide Senior Diversity Coordinator at Baker Botts LLP and the Recruiting and Development Coordinator at Skadden, Arps. Amie is a member of the National Association for Law Placement (NALP) and on the Board of the Association of Law Firm Diversity Professionals (ALFDP).
